In 2025, the global commercial refrigeration industry stands at a historic turning point: persistently high energy costs, increasingly stringent carbon neutrality regulations, and unprecedented consumer focus on food safety and sustainability, while the maturity of new technologies such as AIoT, 5G, and edge computing has significantly improved. Against this backdrop, the traditional era of “selling freezers and cold storage” has completely ended, replaced by a new business model that “sells temperature, sells data, sells green compliance, and sells full lifecycle value.”
As a leading global provider of intelligent commercial refrigeration solutions, INTELLICOLD has maintained its position as the world’s number one in IoT connections for commercial cold chain equipment, number one in remote energy consumption optimization for energy savings, and number one in zero-carbon cold storage deliveries for the past three years. Today, we are sharing five of the most noteworthy trends for 2025 with our partners in advance, and assure you—INTELLICOLD is ready.

Trend 1: From “selling equipment” to “selling temperature as a service”(TaaS)
By 2025, more than 35% of global chain retail and catering groups will shift their cold chain equipment payments from CAPEX (capital expenditure) to OPEX (operating expenditure), paying suppliers directly based on “actual operating temperature × time”. This means you no longer need to invest millions upfront in freezers, but instead pay monthly for “precise temperature control from 0 to 4°C”, just like paying an electricity bill.
IntelliChina pioneered the “Cold-as-a-Service” business model as early as 2023, and we will officially release TaaS version 3.0 in 2025.
- Low down payment, pay per square meter/month
- Includes complete equipment, installation, 5G IoT module, cloud platform, maintenance, insurance, and upgrades/replacements
- INTELLICOLD will compensate for any energy consumption exceeding limits during the contract period
- 100% equipment recycling and reuse upon contract termination, achieving a completely zero carbon footprint
Currently, over 2,800 leading global chains, including Walmart China, Starbucks Asia, 7-Eleven Southeast Asia, and Hema Fresh, have signed TaaS contracts with us, resulting in an average annual reduction of 31.7% in total cold chain costs per store.
Trend 2: AI-driven proactive predictive maintenance becomes standard practice, reducing downtime losses to zero.
Traditional refrigeration equipment has a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 18 to 24 months, while by 2025 customers will require an MTBF of ≥60 months, and any unplanned downtime losses must be borne by the supplier.
INTELLICOLD’s unique “high-performance compressor” has been iterated to the 5th generation. By using 128 real-time signals such as compressor current waveform, vibration spectrum, refrigerant pressure micro-fluctuation, ambient temperature and humidity, and door opening and closing frequency, it can accurately predict the probability of component failure 21 to 45 days in advance, with an accuracy rate of up to 99.3%.
Throughout 2024, we helped our clients avoid 1,276 major refrigeration failures, resulting in a cumulative reduction of over RMB 380 million in product scrap value. And that’s not all—in 2025, Polaris AI will fully open its third-party interfaces, allowing any brand of older freezers to enjoy the same predictive maintenance capabilities simply by installing an INTELLICOLD Edge-AI box.

Trend 3: Natural refrigerant + phase change materials + liquid cooling combined heat and power, achieving an overall energy efficiency ratio exceeding 8.0.
In 2024, the EU completely banned refrigerants with a GWP greater than 150, and China, California in the United States, and Canada will follow suit in 2025. R744 (CO₂) and R290 (propane) have become the only legal options, but using only CO₂ transcritical systems faces the pain points of low energy efficiency in summer and high initial investment.
In 2024, INTELLICOLD launched the world’s first “CO₂ + phase change energy storage + combined cooling and heating” three-in-one system – the ArcticFusion series.
- Uses CO₂ for cooling during the day, while storing the cooling heat in a phase change material tank.
- Releases cooling heat using the phase change material at night/during peak electricity hours, with almost zero power consumption.
- 100% of the condensation heat is recovered for domestic hot water or winter heating.
- Annual comprehensive SCOP reaches 8.7 (compared to only around 4.0 for traditional CO₂ systems).
In 2025, we will open a zero-carbon cold chain demonstration base with a single cold storage area of 35,000 square meters. The annual electricity consumption will be only 19% of that of traditional cold storage. We welcome all partners to make an appointment to visit.
Trend 4: Traceability of the carbon footprint of the entire cold chain will become a mandatory disclosure indicator.
Starting in 2025, the EU’s CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) will officially impose carbon tariffs on imported food. The US SEC, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment have also successively required listed companies to disclose Scope 3 carbon emissions. The carbon footprint of the cold chain accounts for more than 40% of the Scope 3 emissions of the food industry. Whoever achieves traceable, verifiable, and tradable carbon assets first will gain a competitive advantage in the next 10 years.
INTELLICOLD’s self-developed “CarbonCold Blockchain Carbon Platform” has been integrated with Swiss Gold Standard, Vera VCS, and China’s CCER. It can calculate the carbon emissions generated by every kilowatt-hour of electricity, every gram of refrigerant, and every shipment in real time, and automatically generate internationally recognized carbon credit certificates. Currently, 12 Fortune Global 500 food companies have completed carbon-neutral procurement through our platform, cumulatively offsetting 870,000 tons of carbon emissions.

Trend 5: The explosion of ultra-low temperatures (-86℃) and portable cold chain logistics, with mRNA vaccines, cell therapy, and new retail of ice cream as the three driving forces.
In 2024, the global annual production capacity of mRNA vaccines exceeded 20 billion doses, and the cell and gene therapy (CGT) market is expected to exceed 60 billion US dollars in 2025. At the same time, the demand for mobile cold chain at -30℃ to -40℃ has surged in the new retail of premium ice cream and frozen fresh food.
INTELLICOLD is simultaneously developing three ultra-low temperature tracks:
- The -86℃ ultra-low temperature freezer in the Cold Series utilizes a proprietary multi-layered Stirling + self-cascade hybrid refrigeration technology, with a single unit power consumption of only 9.8kWh/24h.
- The SnowFox portable -80℃ cold chain box boasts a 72-hour runtime and supports air transport; it has become the globally designated transportation equipment for Pfizer and Moderna.
- The FlashFreezer quick-freezing cabinet achieves -40℃ freezing in just 9 minutes, perfectly preserving the texture of ice cream; it has been signed with Häagen-Dazs, DQ, and Zhong Xue Gao stores nationwide.
In conclusion: Choosing IntelliCold means choosing certainty for the next 10 years.
By 2026, the commercial cold chain industry will have completed a remarkable transformation from “equipment supplier” to “temperature service and carbon solutions provider.” Some will be forced to transform due to regulatory pressure, while others will already be at the forefront of this trend.
For the past 12 years since its founding, INTELLICOLD has focused on one thing: using the most advanced technology, the most reliable products, and the most attentive service to help global customers “turn cold chain into profit and carbon emissions into assets.”
Currently, we have the following globally:
- 9 R&D centers, 1200+ technology patents
- 16 intelligent production bases, annual capacity exceeding 800,000 units
- 5000+ authorized service outlets, average response time < 2 hours
- Over 650,000 devices online, cumulative runtime exceeding 1.5 billion hours
In 2025, INTELLICOLD officially launched its new brand slogan:
“Cold Intelligence for a Sustainable World”
—Intelligent Cooling, A Green World
